Summary of Position

The Adventure and Sport Program Coordinator oversees and administers the daily operations of the adventure program, which includes outdoor adventure trips such as mountain biking, outdoor climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, and snowshoeing, the sports programs, special events, the indoor climbing wall, equipment rental, student development, teambuilding programming, monitoring budgets and researching vendors, maintaining records, equipment, and inventories, marketing, planning, and reporting. This position ensures compliance with risk management, safety, and injury policies and procedures. The Adventure and Sport Program Coordinator provides leadership and supervision of 15+ student employees including timesheet processing, overseeing development and assessment of learning outcomes, and coordinating the Trip Leader apprentice training program. This position oversees administration of the CPR/AED/First Aid and outdoor certifications of employees.

The Adventure and Sport Program exists to meet the needs of the RRCC community, encourage participation in the programs, and foster a fun, inclusive, and safe environment for program participants. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5 pm. May require night and occasional weekend hours for programming and weekend outdoor trips. Attendance at various campus-wide events and some travel is required. May be required to work from any RRCC campus, primarily at the Lakewood campus with occasional hours at the Arvada campus.

  • Planning and Prioritization: Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements. Coordinates with others in response to multiple, competing demands to ensure work is completed in a timely manner. Readily readjusts priorities to respond to pressing and changing demands.

 

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work with a diverse student and staff populations.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to give and receive information accurately and present information to groups and in public settings.
  • Knowledge of business practices.
  • Knowledge of risk management concepts in outdoor recreation programming and climbing wall operations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area or equivalent experience. An education equivalency will not count towards the one year required experience listed below.
  • One (1) year experience in leading outdoor trips, climbing wall operations and maintenance, and direct supervision experience.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience programming or service delivery for diverse community populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in land agency permitting for adventure/outdoor activities.
  • First Aid, CPR/AED Certification.
  • First Aid, CPR/AED Instructor Certification, or ability to obtain within first 60 days of employment, which SRC can provide.
  • Climbing Instructor Certification (AMGA, PCIA, etc.) or ability to obtain within first year of employment.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification.
  • Completion of avalanche safety course upon appointment or ability to obtain within first year of employment.
  • Driving RRCC State Vehicles is required. A valid driver’s license is required, or ability to obtain within first 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in outdoor recreation, sports management, recreation, higher education, physical education, or related area.
  • One (1) year experience of sports management.
  • Experience in marketing programs, events, and/or services.
  • Experience in adventure/experiential education, with particular emphasis in campus recreation and experience facilitating climbing programs for diverse participants.
  • Leave No Trace Certification/Instructor.
  • Knowledge of Fusion Rec Management Software or similar software.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and supporting the success of students and staff from underrepresented populations in college.
Physical & Cognitive Demands
The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.
  • Moves, positions, and transports equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Starting Salary Starting salary is determined by education and experience in accordance with our compensation plan. This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
