Introduction

Attention all soon-to-be high school graduates and college students! Are you looking for a great way to earn a full-time salary, acquire valuable skills and learn about the exciting career of law enforcement? The Prince William County Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of Police Cadet, which is designed for individuals 18 to 20 years of age who desire to become a police officer. Police Cadets gain firsthand experience in a variety of areas of law enforcement to include Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations, Forensics and Administrative Support.

This is a full-time, paid position with benefits that includes a flexible schedule for continuing education classes. Those selected will receive on the job training and also participate in weekly physical fitness sessions. At age 21, Cadets are considered for transition to the Police Academy and become certified police officers upon graduation. Please note that upon age 21, Police Cadets must meet all eligibility criteria and be selected for a police officer position, or their status as a Police Cadet will end.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or resident alien eligible for U.S. citizenship by age 21.
  • Must successfully complete a DMV record check, polygraph examination, criminal background investigation, and be able to meet the public safety/police officer medical standards prior to selection for the Police Cadet Program.
  • Must be within 90 days of 18th birthday, or already age 18, on date of application to begin the selection process.
  • Police Cadets must be 18 to 20 years of age at date of appointment. Must, within six months of reaching age 21, meet all eligibility requirements for Police Officer and be selected for employment as Police Officer.
  • Police Cadets shall not use any tobacco products on or off duty starting at the time of appointment, and must sign a Condition of Employment Agreement acknowledging their agreement.

NATURE OF WORK
This is a stand-alone classification. This class is designed to provide training in preparation for potential placement into a Police Officer role. Responsibilities may include providing standard office support in accordance with established guidelines; performing inventory checks; conducting warrant counts; and transporting vehicles.
TYPICAL CLASS RESPONSIBILITIES (These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

1. Performs various clerical duties utilizing standard office equipment and/or department specific equipment, including filing; responding to standard information requests; and maintaining reports and other documentation to ensure availability and accuracy of information.
2. Performs inventory checks to ensure proper maintenance of department equipment.

3. Conducts a count of warrants served within defined areas.

4. Transports department vehicles to service garages to ensure proper maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles.
 

5. Traffic Control

6. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

DIRECTION PROVIDED

Incumbents are typically not responsible for providing formal work direction.

 

 
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

8th grade education and 0-12 months of related experience.

PREFERENCES

High school graduate or have passed a General Education Requirement (GED).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
