Research Scientist 1

Job Description

RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, to conduct research in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) applied to gravitational-wave instrumentation, in particular control of optical systems. The primary duty is to develop robust AI techniques to optimize the performance of interferometeric optical systems. This duty entails building a simulation environment and commissioning a table-top experiment to develop and test these techniques and then applying them to solve controls problems in the LIGO detectors and in other optics environments.  May be asked to prepare research narratives for grant proposals and perform other duties as needed.  The work will require interacting with a diverse group of communities--gravitational-wave instrumentalists, AI experts as part of the NSF Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions, and other interested communities in the Boston area such as Lincoln Lab.

Job Requirements:
REQUIRED:  Ph.D in physics; at least two years of postdoctoral research in research areas related to optical systems and AI, preferably in the field of gravitational-wave physics; proficiency with AI techniques on multiple platforms; proficiency with laser interferometry, control systems, and real-time control architectures; and ability to design, build, and operate table-top experiments involving laser interferometry and multi-input multi-output control systems.  PREFERRED:  familiarity with simulation tools that model interferometric optical systems (like Finesse, OSCAR, or similar) and with large language models architectures.  Job #24152
