Overview

Research Tech position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Rani George at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  Our research focuses on the investigation of molecular aberrations in pediatric cancers that can be targeted for therapy.  The candidate will join a team of investigators leading these efforts in the academic environment, working at the bench and collaborating closely with other members of the laboratory. 

The main responsibilities of the individual will be maintenance of mouse colonies, conduct breeding and therapy trials. Therefore, only candidates with knowledge and experience in mouse husbandry need apply. The candidate will be responsible for submitting new protocols and amendments for in vivo studies. Strong oral and written communication skills are critical.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a cell culture bank, propagation of cell lines and mycoplasma testing.
  • Familiarity with principles of molecular biology and basic laboratory techniques such as PCR, DNA and RNA purification, plasmid cloning is required. Another essential part is establishment of maintenance and improvement of lab protocols and introducing new techniques to the lab. The individual will also at times perform experiments focused towards a specific project.
  • General maintenance and organization of the laboratory. Tasks include maintaining a database of cell lines, plasmids and antibodies, purchase ordering, dealing with vendors, organization and maintenance of storage, equipment maintenance and repairs, preparation of general reagents such as stock solutions and buffers.
  • The individual will also act as Lab Safety Officer.
  • Assist in training and orienting new staff, including orienting new research fellows and associates.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No supervisory responsibilities.  Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.

Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field with a minimum of 1+ years of  post degree related experience to include mouse husbandry.
  • Candidate must be a responsible individual with strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must.
  • A working knowledge of computers and database management is necessary.
