Essential Job Duties

The Data Science Academy (DSA) Communications Specialist is responsible for implementing and maintaining the communications objectives of the NC State Data Science Academy (DSA). Reporting to the Executive Director with a dotted line to the Senior Vice Provost, the communications specialist will raise awareness of data science and AI initiatives at NC State and raise the visibility of the DSA, both within the university community and with external partners.

The DSA communications specialist will build enthusiasm for data science, bring together new research collaborations, support intercollegiate cooperation, and advance the goal to make data science experiences available to everyone at NC State and beyond. DSA communications will attract and inform partners in many sectors of business, industry, and government.

The communications specialist will lead the communications strategy for the Data Science Academy, with a focus on welcoming, interdisciplinary, and inclusive messaging. They will execute projects directly as well as coordinate with staff across the university. They will proactively seek creative mechanisms to share information about data science and AI at NC State, including email marketing, print, video, social/digital media, art, and performance. They will manage media relations, develop materials for fundraising, assist donor stewardship and alumni relations, and advertise courses, programs, consulting, and special events. They will collect and analyze data to make decisions and communicate about the endeavors and impact of the Data Science Academy. They will lead the writing of stories and annual reports.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience related to the area of assignment
At least 1-3 years’ experience in a similar office environment, preferable higher education or nonprofits
Experience in developing and implementing focused communication plans.
