English Language Coaches working with the Intensive English Program (IEP) at NC State University are responsible for meeting one-on-one and in-person with assigned IEP students. IEP English language coaching assignments might include meeting with current undergraduate or graduate students, current IEP-Academic students, or members of the local community. This position is housed in the IEP and will report to the IEP director. Successful candidates will possess:
- excellent oral and written English communication skills,
- proven knowledge of second language acquisition
- strong organizational skills
- proven ability to work with a diverse international population.
Coaches will meet, in-person on NC State’s main campus, usually at the IEP offices on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. Coaching sessions are, in most cases, student directed. In other words, a student discusses their academic English challenges with the coach. The coach is responsible for determining the best activities and/or materials to use in each case. This is a non-faculty, “at will”, temporary hourly appointment and is based on coaching needs expressed by students throughout the semester.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coaching students in one-on-one, in-person, 1-hour sessions focused on informal and/or academic English language skills
- Communicating with the IEP director and, when necessary, outside stakeholders regarding specific assignment outcomes, the student’s specific English language challenges, suggestions for further work, etc.
- Maintaining and submitting summary and attendance reports for coaching sessions on a weekly basis
- Participating in IEP staff meetings, when requested.

Minimum Experience/Education
- Bachelor’s degree in any field
- Two plus (2+) years experience working with secondary and/or post-secondary English language learners at an intermediate-to-advanced proficiency level
Department Required Skills
- Excellent English communication skills – both written and oral
- Knowledge of second language acquisition for all skill areas including writing, reading, speaking, and listening
- Familiarity with academic English and the academic expectations of current college-level undergraduate/graduate courses
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Master’s degree or Certificate in TESOL
- Current knowledge of issues/concerns relevant to the ESL field
- International teaching experience and /or fluency in a second language are highly desired
