Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution.

Purpose of Position:
Patrick & Henry Community College is seeking a self-motivated professional and team player to serve as Switchboard Operator. This position must provide assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as answer and transfer all incoming calls in a timely and professional manner. The Operator must remain up-to-date on college information in order to answer questions pertaining to P&HCC. The successful candidate will maintain a professional and pleasant demeanor when assisting others.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Greet and assist visitors, students, faculty and staff.
  • Answer questions requiring knowledge of college operations and department-specific functions.
  • Answer incoming calls as soon as possible and transfer to appropriate personnel or office.
  • Send and receive faxes, sign for packages, checkout laptop keys.
  • Approve vehicle reservations and distribute vehicle keys to faculty and staff for required state travel.
  • Maintain updated information with current activities and schedules.
  • Maintain current campus activities on marquee and update daily, as needed.
  • Inform supervisor or security/police department of any suspicious activity or unusual behavior.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • KSA’s and/or Competencies required to successfully perform the work.
  • Intermediate computer application skills including word processing, spreadsheet, database software, such as PeopleSoft.
  • Intermediate Internet usage ability.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform necessary tasks independently or with minimum supervision. Team oriented and the ability to follow through and achieve goals.
