POSITION TITLE: Research Programmer III

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will focus on developing command line and graphical user interfaces to simulate, visualize, and analyze structural biology and chemoinformatics data, and to improve the user-friendliness of AutoDock software both for end users and for other programmers building tools that use AutoDock components as a library in Python. An ideal candidate would be able to take on some technical leadership. They would advise on code design and best practices, and would be responsible for establishing, upholding, and communicating standards for technical work in the lab.

The hiring laboratory is a highly multidisciplinary environment, which develops the popular molecular docking suite AutoDock. We are involved in building software infrastructure, and in using the developed software in drug discovery projects. We have a strong emphasis on data analysis, management, and visualization of large molecular virtual screenings, as well as integration with other tools (e.g. OpenMM). Supporting our large user community is a priority.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. A degree in a biological or chemical science may be accepted if accompanied with programming education, training, and/or experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years experience in software application development and research programming.
  • Experience in software development in Python
  • A degree in STEM or equivalent work experience
  • Working with, managing or refactoring complex codebases

PREFERRED SKILLSET:

  • Packaging Python software on PyPI and conda-forge, including compiled modules with Python bindings.
  • Writing software that uses chemoinformatics libraries, especially RDKit.
  • Development of desktop applications (e.g., PyQT, PySide)
  • Molecular modeling or computational chemistry
  • Building or maintaining websites
  • C++, git, GitHub

LOCATION: La Jolla, California, or Remote Employment within the United States. In rare circumstances, candidates outside the United States will be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position works in an office environment. Further details of the physical requirements of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $71,000 to $90,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
