Summary of Position

The Research Scientist I will participate in basic and applied research in the field of Forest Ecology. In collaboration with US Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, the successful candidate will assist with the development of software that aids in the collection, compilation, and analysis of forest inventory data, as well as provide database technical support in the form of editing and distribution of data. Duties include computer programming in R, Git, and SQL to integrate complex geospatial datasets, recognize data errors and gaps, and examine relationships. Production of visual data interpretations are integral to generate authoritative reports, dashboards, and web content for both internal and external audiences. They will be familiar with FIA field and office inventory techniques and data applications and will participate in the development of a workflow to improve and enhance methodologies that study urban and non-urban forest trends. Strong oral and written communications are required to develop presentations, prepare, and present scientific and technical reports, as well as convey findings, recommendations and conclusions to colleagues, the scientific community, and the general public.

Advanced experience reporting with R and RStudio; experience working with relational databases via SQL database language; ability to follow existing ETL pipelines internal Forest Service databases and external IDEs; code management and collaboration using Git and Github

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity working with Esri products and Oracle databases. experience in remote sensing and image processing of optical sensors.
