Essential Job Duties

The NC State University Libraries is excited to announce a unique paid opportunity for graduate students: the Pentair Fellowship. This program offers an exciting chance to provide expertise, lead workshops, and contribute to special initiatives that promote experiential learning in STEM through the use of advanced technologies and tools. Applicants must have experience with the molecular visualization software Pymol. The Fellowship runs from Fall 2024 – Spring 2025. Work schedule will be flexible and can be tailored to your course/research schedule. Mix of in-person and remote work is expected.

Position Overview:
As a Pentair Fellow, you will play a key role in developing and delivering workshops on STEM-focused tools and technologies, with a particular emphasis on molecular visualization software such as PyMOL. Your contributions will also support various STEM initiatives within the Libraries, particularly those that enhance teaching and learning in our high-tech environments, like the Teaching and Visualization Lab (T&V).
The Pentair Fellowship offers room for growth and creativity, allowing you to participate in both your projects and the larger direction of the initiative. Fellows will gain valuable teaching experience while working on innovative educational projects.

Key Project Focus:
The primary project of the Pentair Fellowship is designed to enhance student engagement and learning through the use of visualization software in our Teaching and Visualization Lab (T&V). This high-tech space, with its ability to display up to eight devices simultaneously, offers immersive learning experiences that deepen students’ understanding of complex STEM concepts.
Specifically, the project will focus on integrating immersive learning experiences, using molecular visualization tools like PyMOL, into existing STEM curricula and Library programming. PyMOL allows students to explore, manipulate, and analyze 3D protein structures, enhancing their understanding of molecular biology and biochemistry. By leveraging this software in our innovative high-tech spaces, we aim to improve student comprehension of complex protein systems and provide them with essential skills for advanced research in areas like protein engineering.

Fellowship Activities:
  1. Development of Protein Visualization Demos:
    • Create and design advanced software demos for protein system visualizations in T&V.
    • Develop use cases to showcase to faculty the diverse options and capabilities available.
  2. Instruction in Protein Visualization with PyMOL:
    • Develop and teach a workshop titled “Protein Visualization with PyMOL,” utilizing the immersive features of T&V.
  3. Adaptation of Instructional Visualization Activities:
    • Collaborate with librarians and faculty to adapt existing instructional visualization activities to the T&V space.
    • Integrate these activities into course-based instruction to enhance learning outcomes.
  4. Support for Experiential Learning:
    • Contribute to the development of the Collection and Research Engagement departments’ strategies and support systems for visual experiential learning activities in T&V.
    • Assist in building a comprehensive framework for sustained engagement and support in visual and spatial literacy initiatives.
