Head Cook: Duties and Responsibilities

The Head Cook reports to the Director of Congregate Meals.  

This is a security-sensitive position and is subject to a criminal history record. Criminal history records will be used only for the purpose of evaluating applicants for employment in security-sensitive positions. (Texas Government Code 411.094 & Texas Education Code 51.215)

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  1. Supervises general operation of the kitchen.
  2. Keeps temperature logs of freezers, walk-in and serving line.
  3. Helps with training of employees.
  4. Make sure health regulations are enforces in all areas.
  5. Prepares entrée.
  6. Responsible to keep kitchen area and equipment clean.
  7. Takes temperatures of food on serving line.
  8. Assist other workers with duties when needed.
  9. Keeps a log of the number of meals served to MOW. Checks total with MOW director monthly.

10. Check the invoice when food is delivered. Has the authority to refuse items.

11. Assist with food ordering when necessary.

12. Supervises serving line.

13. Prepares carry out meals.

14. Cleans and Oversees cleaning after serving.

15. Oversees storing left over items.

16. Assist other cooks as needed and as time allows.

17. Walk in dates should be checked and cleaned EVERY Friday.

18. Help prepare any items for freezer or tray from food bank.

19. Takes a food safety course when required.

20. Assist Director with menu suggestions.

21. Assist with other duties when needed or assigned by Director.

22. When Director is absent, the head cook is in charge of ALL employees.

23. When needed should contact Director or assigned supervisor

In case of any emergency.

24. Take all training required by Vernon College employees.

25. Must pass the Civil Rights for Special Nutrition programs test.

26. Authorized to pick up orders at the Food bank in Wichita Falls.

Travel Required: Minimal

Experience and Training: Experienced in meal preparation, food safety and kitchen management.

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of meal planning, preparation, and safety in a commercial kitchen, ability to work well with others. 

Preferred Qualifications: Minimum of 3 years working in a commercial kitchen setting.

Minimum Educational Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED.

Salary or Salary Range: This is a part-time 75% position with full time benefits. This position is a Classified II position on the Classified salary schedule. The salary is $19,099 to $19,671 depending on experience. Applications will be accepted until this position is filled. The position is available immediately.
