Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Director (IX)

Job Description

Position Summary

The MESA Director will report directly to the ARC/FLC Dean of STEM – Math & Computer Science. The MESA Program Director is responsible for day-to-day management of the MESA Community College Program/MCCP. With programmatic guidance from the Chancellor’s Office State Project Monitor, the MESA Program Director maintains communications between the MESA Program, engineering, mathematics and science faculty, unit heads of student support services, engineering mathematics, and science department chairpersons/deans, MESA participants, student organizations, related professional societies and campus administrators; coordinates planning of all student services which include admission, financial aid, scholarships, summer programs and jobs, and academic, career and student advising. The MESA Program Director is also responsible for ensuring student eligibility, that student contractual agreements are met, maintains program records, coordinates evaluation of program activities and accomplishments, participates in MESA training, evaluation, and other activities, and works with the Faculty Sponsor to ensure successful implementation of the program.

For the MESA grant, the Ed Code specifies goals, outcomes, and roles included in this position:

  • Increasing the number of socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged students pursuing baccalaureate degrees in STEM majors who are eligible to transfer to four-year higher education institutions.
  • Implementing efficient processes and practices and using existing college transfer centers to achieve greater MESA program student transfers to four-year higher education institutions.
  • Implementing strategies to increase the rate at which MESA program students are deemed transfer-ready in STEM majors to four-year higher education institutions.
  • Improving the academic performance of MESA program students.
  • Increasing the leadership skills and raising the educational expectations of MESA program students.
  • Strengthening relationships with educators and prospective employers in business and industry to establish student internships, scholarships, and other career opportunities for MESA program students.
  • Establishing partnerships with University of California and California State University Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement programs and Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement College Preparatory programs, California Alliance for Minority Participation programs, or similar programs in an effort to provide optimal student support services.
  • Implementing strategies to collaborate with campus programs, such as the Student Equity and Achievement Program established in Section 78222 and the Student Success and Support Program established in Article 1 (commencing with Section 78210) of Chapter 2 of Part 48, to leverage additional resources and opportunities for MESA program students and ensure that MESA programs are integrated into campus culture and infrastructure.


Typical Duties

  • Planning and administering program activities, including travel and events.
  • Collaborating with STEM faculty to develop the MESA program.
  • Contributing to the improvement of ARC/FLC’s enrollment, retention, support, and graduation/transfer rates for MESA students.
  • Collaborating with the office of Institutional research.
  • Providing regular updates to appropriate college administrators and constituency groups.
  • Engaging with community partners to develop opportunities for students.
  • Hiring, supervising, and evaluating employees serving the MESA program.
  • Managing all administrative, budget, compliance and reporting aspects for the Grant, including evaluating program needs.
  • Participating in College accreditation efforts and Program Review.
  • Solving operational problems as they arise in the implementation of the Grant.
  • Hiring, supervising, and evaluating employees serving the MESA program.
  • Collaborating with STEM faculty to develop the MESA program.
  • Contributing to the improvement of FLC’s enrollment, retention, support, and graduation/transfer rates for MESA students.
  • Collaborating with the office of Institutional research.
  • Managing budgets and associated forms for the Grant, including grant reporting, stipend forms, purchasing, and contracts.
  • Managing all administrative, budget, compliance and reporting aspects for the Grant, including evaluating program needs.
  • Writing and submitting required reports in a timely manner, and evaluating program needs.
  • Planning and administering program activities, including travel and events.
  • Providing regular updates to appropriate college administrators and constituency groups.
  • Engaging with community partners to develop opportunities for students.
  • Developing, administering, managing, and overseeing budgets.
  • Ensuring compliance with grant and project requirements.
  • Participating in College accreditation efforts and Program Review.
  • Solving operational problems as they arise in the implementation of the Grant.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Have a master’s degree from an accredited institution completed by the time of hire.
  2. Have one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment.
  3. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
