Job Description
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is seeking a Deputy Medical Director, STI Services for a contracted position at the Baltimore City Health Department Sexual Health Clinics. We seek a Physician Assistant with experience in STI, HIV, HIV PrEP/PEP, and Hepatitis C clinical care and an interest in supporting programmatic STI, HIV, HIV PrEP/PEP, and Hepatitis C services. The practitioner will have dedicated part-time administrative time for Deputy Medical Director activities. The Deputy Medical Director will have 40% FTE (2 days a week) of administrative time, and the remainder 60% FTE (3 days a week) to provide direct patient care. The Deputy Medical Director will report to the Medical Director for STI, HIV, HIV PrEP/PEP, and Hepatitis C services who reports to the Clinical Chief for STI Services. Will provide support in clinician staffing scheduling, patient triage, facilitate clinical inquires made to the Sexual Health Clinics from external agencies, develop and refine standard operating procedures, and coordinate projects/new workflows with supervisors and staff of all professional groups at the BCHD Sexual Health Clinics. The Deputy Medical Director will work independently under the supervision of the Medical Director for STI services, or the Clinical Chief in the Medical Director’s absence.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Administrative Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for completing timesheets of provider (NP/PA) staff biweekly or as required.
- Coordination of requests for time off with the Clinic Manager. The employee will request time off from the clinic manager, who will review it as it pertains to the clinic schedule and clinic capacity. The assistant Medical Director will review the request as it applies to the reasonableness of the employee’s role, time, and adherence to JHH policies (i.e. ensure 1 person isn’t requesting too much time off, has the time available in their leave bank, is reasonable in terms of their overall schedule, and is not taking advantage of the clinic in their request).
- Point person for issues related to EMR modifications and improvement, as it pertains to clinician workflow.
- Attend on average 1 meeting per week on EPIC implementation and improvement, complete reports as requested as it pertains to EPIC implementation, and coordinate with the OCHIN EPIC team on improvements/requests to improve clinical flow in EPIC.
- Work with the Clinic Manager to help manage STI clinician schedule updates for callouts and rearrangements of shifts.
- Work with the front desk supervisor and Clinic Manager to ensure all patients are rescheduled/redirected during operation changes and assist with prioritizing which patients to reschedule based on the reason for the visit.
- Assist the Assistant Commissioner or their designee in assigning student rotations to STI clinician preceptors, and internal new hire onboarding rotations with STI clinician preceptors.
- Develop and update sexual health clinic Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) pertaining to clinician workflows, as assigned by the Medical Director for STI services, and as identified as a need by the Deputy Medical Director for STI services. The deputy Medical Director for STI services will obtain input from staff groups affected by the workflows and propose to the Medical Director for STI services for approval.
- Lead quality assurance activities including matching external laboratory results to existing insight patient encounters, for results that require review, and coordination with BDC laboratory to resolve specimen issues, ordering issues, and process improvement.
- Support clinicians in the use of commercial laboratory test ordering online portal, including collection of appropriate documentation to add new clinician users, maintain relevant ordering picklists, and troubleshoot user issues and workflow issues.
- Serve as the point person for RN/MA Express Testing (asymptomatic) visits, including supervising sign-off and follow-up of results and clear guidelines to the RN/MA conducting Express Visits.
- Serve as a point person to support clinicians in troubleshooting Baltimore City IT updates affecting clinician workflows.
- Serve as a point person for clinician supply and medication stocking in the clinic, including review of new supplies or medications requested, and feedback on inventory and stocking procedures to clinic team members involved in this process.
- Serve as a point person, when required, for clinical inquiries made to the Sexual Health Clinics from external agencies.
- Present information to the clinician team and the sexual health clinic staff to keep these groups informed.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform clinic-based evaluation of patients, including taking detailed sexual history of sexual practices, sexual partners, risk factors for sexually transmitted infections, and contraception.
- Perform focused physical examinations including male and female genitourinary examination, pelvic examination, and neurological examination.
- Collect patient specimens including urethral, vaginal, cervical, and pharyngeal swabs for gram stain, wet mount, culture, nucleic acid testing, PAP smear/cytology, and other point-of-care testing.
- Order relevant lab testing for STI evaluation.
- Counsel patients regarding explanation of diagnosis and treatment, risk reduction for sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
- Administer appropriate treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
- Refer patients as indicated to primary care, family planning, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis care, and other community services.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives of clinic operations.
- Assist in precepting a variety of learners including medical students, NP and PA students, residents, fellows, and other health care professionals
- Participate in research activities authorized by BCHD.
- Provide Emergency Services to the Baltimore City Health Department as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body. Completion of a CAAHEP-certified Physician Assistant program.
- Must be licensed as PA in the State of Maryland.
- Three year's experience in a related clinical area and obtained proficiency in the area of specialty.
- Residency or fellowship program in an area of specialization may substitute for some experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of related experience.
- Supervisory experience.
