Job Description
General Summary/Purpose
The Department of Psychiatry, Affective Disorders and Psychiatry Genetics are seeking a Research Technologist to assist with various projects in the Lee and Tamashiro labs, focusing on epigenetic mechanisms of stress on learning and memory. The Lee and Tamashiro labs utilize postmortem brain tissues, animal models, and tissue culture cell lines to investigate how stress alters epigenetic markers, gene expression, and neuroendocrine pathways, which can contribute to psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include: biohazard/radiation handling, basic cell and tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, basic molecular biology techniques (DNA, RNA, and protein characterization), or other specialized histology and biochemistry techniques.
- Perform in vitro (tissue culture) experiments to investigate the role of hormones and other chemicals and measure their impact on gene function.
- Conduct in vivo (rats and mice) experiments and perform small animal surgery and behavioral testing.
- Use basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.
- Collect, compile and analyze data using basic word processing and spreadsheet (Microsoft Office) computer programs.
- Monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and committees for laboratory safety and animal care.
- Provide basic molecular biology support such as DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, PCR, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting to collaborators and help train students and other personnel in molecular biology techniques.
- Perform other duties as are consonant with this position under the direction of the supervisor.
Specific Physical Requirements
- Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
- Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
- Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard, operating a pipette, or using fine surgical instruments.
- Ability to see within normal parameters.
- Ability to hear within normal range.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, chemistry or related scientific field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some related undergraduate or post-undergraduate basic science laboratory work experience.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($43,160 tageted; Commensurate with experience)
