The Forsyth Technical Community College Library is seeking a friendly, enthusiastic, and team-orientated full-time Library Technical Services Specialist who will provide excellent customer service and promote a positive library experience to all users and visitors. This position helps to maintain a friendly and welcoming environment in the library. As part of the Library Services team, the Library Technical Services Specialist will value innovation and collaboration and commit themselves to fostering an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position will report to the Instructional Librarian.

  • Bachelor’s degree or three years of experience as a library cataloger working in a library setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with library colleagues, faculty, students, and the public by providing excellent customer service.
  • Organizational skills including the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and accurately estimate time for tasks.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, Excel, database software, and compiling statistical data.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting, while having the flexibility to handle a variety of colleagues and students in a library setting.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to perform research accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform copy cataloging.
  • Perform a high volume of work with accuracy and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Experience working with open educational resources.
  • Experience working with digital literacy initiatives.
  • Experience working with LibGuides.
  • Experience working with learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle.

 

 
Essential Duties
Customer Service and Cataloging Responsibilities


    • Processes withdrawn materials and updates or deletes holdings and bibliographic records from local and online databases.
    • Provide a full range of circulation services, including checking in and out of materials, emptying book drop, setting up library card accounts and resolving account issues, locating reading materials, accepting fines and fees, placing holds, and transferring items
    • Assist patrons in using computers, personal technology devices, copiers, scanners, faxes, and the library’s online resources
    • Answer routine reference inquiries, and refer patrons needing further assistance to librarians
    • Perform regular maintenance on bibliographic records individually or in batches. This may include work on upgrading records to national and local standards, classification numbers, name and subject headings, physical locations, or reconciling records between different databases Evergreen and OCLC.
    • Collaborates with other library units to develop, implement, assess, and refine metadata workflows, policies, and procedures for the library’s digital collections within Institutional Repository. Verify bibliographical data for materials, including author, title, publisher, publication date, and edition
    • Promote library services using technology and other marketing tools
    • Monitor and align local practices with Evergreen Consortium of Libraries and national standards.
    • Catalogs library materials in a variety of formats that are not cataloged by an outside vendor; creates and edits bibliographic and item records for the library’s automated system (Horizon) and for OCLC; adds subject headings, series and character information to optimize discoverability within the library catalog; assigns call numbers; revises bibliographic and holdings records to maintain cataloging consistency and to comply with local practice.
    • Review or bulk edit e-book records provided by various suppliers to make sure their discoverability in the catalog
    • Operate as a member of a cross-departmental team to meet user discovery needs, and collaborate with other departments, serve on committees, attend conferences, and participate in discussions to support idea sharing and discuss issues relating to providing access to library collections and electronic resources

  • Engage in professional communities with the potential to enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities in the position.

  • Be alert to public relations opportunities and use these to promote the College and the department.
  • Serve on College teams as required.
  • Provide administration with information for institutional publications.
