As its mission, the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology (PHP) strives to prepare today’s veterinary, undergraduate, and graduate students to respond to current and future challenges in both veterinary and human medicine. We serve national and global endeavors focused on food animal production, veterinary medicine and human medicine through excellence in teaching, high impact research and discovery, veterinary clinical sciences, and extension/engagement.
We orient our research to the One Health approach focused on the areas of pathology, immunology/infectious disease, farm and food animal medicine (swine, poultry and ruminant), and epidemiology/global health benefiting both animal and human populations.
Our high standards of excellence position us as leaders in the Veterinary College, North Carolina State University, and profession. The College has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked 4th among the nation’s colleges of veterinary medicine in the current U.S. News & World Report survey.
Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health and Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.
Essential Job Duties
The Clinical Pathology service within our department is a dynamic, collaborative team focused on advancing the field through both basic and applied research. We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated expertise in clinical pathology and a strong emphasis on innovative research.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research: Develop a robust, independent, and collaborative research program that aligns with and enhances resident training. The research should focus on areas such as diagnostic tool development, disease mechanisms, or applied clinical studies, complementing existing departmental research, which includes:
- Disease mechanisms and immunologic approaches
- Pathology of infectious diseases (e.g., Clostridium difficile)
- Antimicrobial resistance
- Toxicology and pharmacokinetics
- Infectious diseases in food animals and poultry
Collaborative opportunities also exist with the Departments of Clinical Sciences and Molecular Biomedical Sciences, which focus on companion animal genetics, gastrointestinal biology, stem cell biology, and neurosciences.
- Teaching & Mentorship: Engage in the teaching and clinical training of DVM students, residents, and visiting house officers. This includes clinical year rotations, small group teaching, elective courses, and mentorship. The candidate will also lead clinical pathology resident activities, such as journal clubs, rounds, and board preparation.
- Service & Clinical Duty: Provide clinical service and consultation to clinicians and house officers, supporting the clinical pathology laboratory while contributing to departmental and university-wide service initiatives.
Candidates will be considered for the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications.
Minimum Education and Experience
DVM or equivalent degree required.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills are required.
- Demonstrated expertise in clinical pathology, with an emphasis on both independent and collaborative research.
- Commitment to teaching, mentorship, and clinical service.
- Ability to complement ongoing departmental research initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate should have experience in teaching, clinical practice, and research.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Board certified or board eligibility (American College of Veterinary Pathologists (DACVP) or European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology) is required.
Valid NC Driver's License required
