Assistant Director Multimedia Services

Job Description

Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is seeking an experienced and collaborative multimedia professional with supervisory experience for the position of Assistant Director Multimedia Services. The Assistant Director will provide leadership and management of a team of over a dozen media specialists and two media studios. They will oversee scheduling and deployment of multimedia elements to accommodate growing online course catalog and will directly 3-4 eLearning Producers, the Video Specialist Supervisor and the eLearning Development Supervisor and indirectly manages 8 additional staff including a Graphic Designer, a Motion Graphics Designer and 6 additional exempt and non-exempt multimedia and eLearning professionals.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Staff Performance Management (45%)

  • Hire, train, coach and mentor team members on two campuses to achieve established performance goals and objectives across all functions.
  • Hire, develop and supervise media Production staff to achieve T&L goals.
  • Oversee the work of the Video and eLearning Development teams.
  • Manages the overall Production schedule to ensure high-level instructional media development support for Carey courses for a rapidly increasing number of online and onsite courses.
  • Manage media team portfolio of instructional media assets and media projects and collaborate with team supervisors to strategically grow and expand this portfolio.


Multimedia Production and Resource Management (30%)

  • Provide conceptual, analytical, creative, technical, and editorial input, through graphic design, interactive project development and development of video productions.
  • Sets all standards for production quality, instructional quality, brand alignment, and accessibility adherence.
  • Provide reporting and analytics of the team and program media strategy.
  • Work with the Teaching & Learning Director, Assistant Director for Instructional Design, and Assistant Director for Learning Innovation to set the course development and course revamp production schedule.
  • Manages relationships with 3rd party vendors to support course design and filming.
  • Manages media team budget expenditures and submits requests for additional resources as needed.


Consultation & Training (10%)

  • Identifies, evaluates, pilots and makes recommendations for new and emerging multimedia production strategies that will improve the delivery of instructional content.
  • Designs, develops and delivers training workshops to introduce faculty, and staff to the emerging multimedia techniques and their application towards faculty produced media.
  • Develops Teaching & Learning print/video training materials.


Research (10%)

  • Conducts research to keep abreast of developments of related media technologies.
  • Research and disseminate media resources and best practices in production to enhance the instructional value of multimedia productions.
  • Attends professional conferences and technical trainings.
  • Research professional literature and reports relevance to the T&L team and faculty.


Other duties as assigned (5%)

  • Note - Includes travel to and from Washington, DC when necessary.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Expertise in Video Repositories, course management systems (e.g., Canvas), web design tools (e.g. Photoshop, DreamWeaver, HTML, CSS), digital video, audio editing software, and multimedia authoring software (e.g. Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and/or Final Cut Pro).
  • Substantial Knowledge of lecture/screen capture tools (Kaltura, Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Panopto, etc.)
  • Understanding of ADA/508/UDL standards and serve as departmental Subject Matter Expert (SME) on such matters.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft tools including MS Teams and MSOffice Suite such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Working knowledge of filming equipment (HD Camera, microphone, studio lighting, and teleprompter).
  • Knowledge of, smart phone and tablet applications and their integration with teaching and learning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Project Tracking, ticketing software.
  • Project Management experience; experience managing multimedia recording studio and overseeing production and delivery of multimedia content for online graduate school programs.
  • Experience with design/development of media to support technology enriched learning materials for higher education.
  • Experience developing training materials and conducting workshop/ training sessions for faculty, staff, and students.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree, with Master's degree preferred.
  • Five years related technology and supervisory experience.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Film, New Media Design, Instructional Technology, or related preferred.
  • Five years of professional level experience in New Media Design, Instructional Technology, video production, or eLearning development preferred.
  • 4 or more years’ experience in an institution of higher education in multimedia production, instructional design and development.
  • Experience leading across multi-functional teams.
  • Graduate degree in New Media Design or Visual Communication Design preferred.
  • 2 years of supervisory and management experience, or experience functioning as a team lead strongly preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $62,900 - $110,100 Annually ($72,500 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday - Friday with flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support team needs 
Exempt Status: Exempt
