Job Description

Today, every student needs an education in mathematics, whether planning a career in mathematics or a mathematics-intensive field such as engineering or seeking to develop the mathematical skills important to a job or daily life. With 26 full time and 40+ adjunct faculty members, the Mathematics Department at Monroe Community College provides quality mathematics education for the
College's Brighton Campus, the Downtown Campus, and Workforce Development and Community Education programs. Department members collaborate to provide student success through their commitment to engaging in continuous professional development, maintaining a current curriculum, determining proper placement, offering individualized instruction, and providing student support. Mathematics faculty members are responsible for teaching courses ranging from pre-algebra through linear algebra, as well as statistics, Liberal Arts mathematics, technical mathematics, and mathematics for elementary school teachers.

Because MCC is a multi-campus college, courses in the department may be assigned at the Brighton and/or the Downtown Campus. In addition to teaching and maintaining accurate records on students, tenure-track faculty develop new educational materials, assist with curriculum review and academic assessment, advise and counsel students, and hold office hours. Tenure-track faculty members also perform professional and administrative duties and participate in departmental and institutional functions, including departmental meetings and committee work. Faculty members carry out these responsibilities in an effort to realize the College's mission. Function of Position:

Tenure-track faculty teach classes, develop new educational materials, assist with curriculum review and assessment, perform professional duties, and participate in departmental and institutional functions, including department meetings and committee work. Tenure-track faculty report to the chairperson of the Mathematics Department. Academic departments are led by a peer who serves as a department chair for a three-year term. All tenure-track faculty are in the pool from which the chair is appointed. Faculty are responsible for preparing and teaching courses in the department and will be assigned to the Brighton Campus. Tenure-track faculty may be expected to teach at another campus, extension site, or in an online, remote, and/or hybrid modality. The successful candidate will bring expertise in Mathematics to MCC.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teaches mathematics courses from pre-algebra through calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, including statistics, mathematics for elementary school teachers, technical mathematics, and mathematics for non-science majors. Prepare lesson plans, teaching aids, instructional materials, and student activities for these courses.
  • Demonstrates and maintains current subject area knowledge.
  • Evaluates student performance as per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College
  • Teaches multiple courses/sections each term, as outlined by the contract.
  • Prepares lesson plans and creates instructional materials and activities for student engagement.
  • Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines in accordance with department and College guidelines.
  • Establishes and maintains an engaging and supportive classroom environment.
  • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other records according to department and College guidelines and submits them in a timely manner.
  • Maintains office hours according to contractual guidelines in order to support student learning.
  • Advises students concerning academic, career and related issues according to contractual guidelines.
  • Assists department with student recruitment, enrollment, and placement.
  • Assists department with student retention and completion initiatives Assists with development, review, and revision of department curriculum, including assessment of student learning and program review.
  • Actively participates in academic assessment activities to further the improvement of course design and instruction.
  • Develops innovative teaching pedagogies to facilitate learning.
  • Incorporates high-impact teaching practices into course design.
  • Attends department meetings as a contributing member.
  • Contributes to the College through Division, department, and College committees.
  • Actively engage in department and college-wide retention initiatives.
  • Actively engages in pedagogical and academic discipline professional development.
  • Assists department in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation.
  • Assists in the development of grant proposals and implementation of grant projects.
  • Works independently and in a team setting, demonstrating excellent time management skills to prioritize workflow and multi-task.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the department chair and may be assigned courses at any MCC campus or extension site location.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. All candidates must have a minimum of 18 semester credit hours beyond the level of multivariate Calculus from graduate and/or undergraduate mathematics courses. All coursework and degrees must be from accredited institutions.
  • Evidence that the master's degree has been awarded must be received by June 15, 2025.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of recent successful teaching experience in mathematics at the secondary, college or university level
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies such as learning communities, writing intensive courses, collaborative assignments, service learning, undergraduate research, and capstone projects
  • Awareness of the potential value of technology as a tool for teaching
  • Experience with computerized student record management
  • Interest in pursuing undergraduate research
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages, proficiently

 

 


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $50,600 to $77,952 and is based on these mentioned factors.

MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting and compressed work schedule. The availability of flexible work arrangements varies by division, department, and position, based upon business and operational needs. Limitations to flexible work arrangements are outlined in the official policy.

Prohibition of Remote Work Outside New York State:  Remote work locations outside New York State are not authorized by the College due to out-of-state tax and regulatory implications.  In limited circumstances, prompted by business or operational needs, the College may approve requests to work remotely outside of New York State, on a short term, temporary basis.
